News Release
Allardt Great Pumpkin Festival and Weigh-off Preparations Underway
The Great Pumpkin Festival Committee mailed 189 vendor applications last
week to those individuals and businesses on the vendor mailing list from
the past two years. Anyone who would like to reserve a vendor booth for
the October 2 & 3 Weigh-off and Pumpkin Festival, who did not receive an
application in the mail, may pick one up at Allardt City Hall. The first
80 applications returned with payment will have a space reserved in the
park. A basic space costs $100 and and a space with electricity access
costs $150. There are only 18 electrical hook-ups.

The Pumpkin Festival Committee plans to refocus on the
Weigh-off itself this year and is currently considering membership
with the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth (GPC). The GPC mission
cultivates the hobby of growing giant pumpkins throughout the world
by establishing standards and regulations that ensure quality
of fruit, fairness of competition, recognition of achievement,
fellowship and education for all participating growers and weigh-off sites.
Additional information on the GPC can be found at
www.greatpumpkincommonwealth.com.

While interest and participation in the Great Pumpkin Festival and
Weigh-off seems to be growing each year; unfortunately, volunteers to
oversee the various events have dwindled.

The Quilt Show was removed from the list of events in 2009. "The
Motorcycle Show is being removed from the 2010 program,
and we currently have no one willing to organize the popular car show,"
stated Phillip Gernt, City of Allardt Mayor. Last year's car show,
renamed the Clyde and Zelia Stephens Memorial Car Show, brought in
more than 200 entries. (UPDATE: See new plans for 2010 auto and
motorcycle shows)

The next Pumpkin Festival Committee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday,
Aug. 10, at 7:00 p.m. at Allardt City Hall. Anyone interested in helping with
the festival is encouraged to attend this meeting. We always need volunteers.
